Summer 2026 Featured Trip…Holy Cross 100
Trip Dates: August 10-13, 2026
The Holy Cross 100 is a vehicle supported Mountain Bike adventure that circles the Holy Cross Wilderness Area. This year’s trip spends two nights at the Peter Estin Hut in the northern reaches of the rugged Sawatch Mountain Range and one night at the Betty Bear Hut which sits below the Continental Divide near Hagerman Pass (11,925 ft).
Though a great deal of riding will be on graded dirt roads and high-clearance 4-wheel drive roads, there will be plenty of opportunity to enjoy some of Colorado’s wonderful singletrack. Participants should be very comfortable riding intermediate to advanced backcountry single track.
- Day 1 kick’s off with some mountain biking on Eagle Colorado’s famous high desert singletrack.
- Day 2 is a layover day at the Estin Hut. Adventure opportunities include riding mountain bikes on some of the nearby trails or a hike into the Holy Cross Wilderness and perhaps a dip in an alpine lake.
- Days 3 begins with a descent into the Fryingpan River Valley. The day’s primary focus is a big and beautiful ride along the historic Colorado Midland Railroad grade. Dramatic views and rich history fill the day as you wind your way towards the Continental Divide and Hagerman Pass. At about 4 miles before Hagerman Pass, we will turn in the direction of Ivanhoe Lake and the Betty Bear Hut saving the climb to the pass for fresher legs in the morning.
- Noteworthy: The route stats for Day 3 are impressive. The day starts with ~15 miles of descent (3100 ft) into the Fryingpan River Valley. This is followed by 23 miles of ascent (3300 ft) to Betty Bear Hut. This is no small feat. Fortunately, there is vehicle support to help with any needed “assistance.”
- Day 4 begins with a “descent” back to the Hagerman Pass Road. The morning’s ascent of 1300 ft to Hagerman Pass and the Continental Divide is about 4 miles. Views of Mount Massive and the surrounding alpine terrain will certainly help distract from the task at hand. Singletrack riding opportunities for the final day include the iconic Colorado Trail “descent” from the Continental Divide at Tennessee Pass into Camp Hale National Monument.

FAQ
We explore single track trails and Forest Service roads located in the White River National Forest surrounding the Vail Valley, but not on Vail Mountain. Multi-day trips that access the 10th Mountain Division hut system mostly travel on Forest Service roads with limited single track. Some huts are located close to designated Wilderness Areas where bicycle travel is not allowed, so routes are adjusted accordingly. The Colorado Trail segments offer some of the best single track options on our mountain bike hut trips.
We rent bicycles from local bike shop partners that maintain a fleet of full suspension mountain bikes. Flat pedals are standard issue. Helmet included. Option to bring your own, helmet, bike shoes and pedals if you have them.
Maximize your time in the Vail Valley by going with a guide that knows the terrain, trails, and roads that will best match your abilities. There’s no need to waste time choosing from unknown options, getting lost, or getting in over your head. Plus, mechanicals and accidents happen. Our guides will offer instructional tips, keep your bike in motion, and keep a smile on your face.
You need basic bicycle handling skills and a moderate level of fitness. You should know how to get on and off a bicycle, know how to control your speed with brakes, and be comfortable climbing and descending. If you’re looking to improve your riding, our guides are happy to offer instructional tips.
what participants are saying
We had the best guide for our hike with Paragon. A gentleman named Nate with tons of guiding experience took us on a beautiful driving tour followed by an amazing hike. He was very knowledgeable, flexible, and accommodating. We truly could not have asked for a better experience.
