The Experience
Our guides are experienced backcountry enthusiasts equipped with Wilderness First Aid, Avalanche Training and Winter Navigation knowledge, always willing to share their passions for the winter environment. Whether you are following a Snowshoe Hare track or learning about local history there will always be time for rest breaks, snacks or lunch and enjoying the alpine scenery.

Wrapping Up
After the snowshoe tour, your guide(s) will bring the group back to the Manor Vail Lodge. These half-day group tours are a great value for individuals or small groups looking to experience the natural beauty of the Vail Valley away from the ski resort.

Logistics & Gear

Snowshoeing tends to be a warmer activity than skiing so dress in layers, particularly a moisture-wicking base layer (cotton against the skin is not recommended). A lightweight winter jacket and snow-proof pants are best, but ski jackets and pants will work fine. We provide backpacks in case you need to shed a layer. Wool / Synthetic blend socks are best, winter gloves, ski hat, and sunglasses are recommended.

FAQ

No prior experience is necessary! Snowshoeing is a beginner-friendly activity, and guides will adjust the pace and route based on your skill level.

Dress in layers, with moisture-wicking base layers, an insulated jacket, waterproof pants, and sturdy waterproof boots. Don’t forget warm socks, gloves, and a hat. Sunglasses and sunscreen are also recommended for protection from sun and snow glare.

Snowshoeing is essentially hiking in the snow. Snowshoes prevent you from sinking into deep snow, allowing you to walk across snow-covered terrain with ease.

Yes, snowshoeing is a family-friendly activity. However, age and fitness level should be considered, and it’s recommended to check with the tour provider for any age restrictions.

Winter weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared for varying conditions. Most tours take place in cold temperatures with possible snow or wind, but your guide will ensure you’re informed about the forecast in advance.

Booked 2 snowshoe tours. The first with Donny S asked for a nice relaxing not too difficult tour. Donny S is a great guide, very knowledgeable and we had a wonderful time. Donny took several pictures with beautiful mountain backgrounds and sent them over to us. My husband then wanted to do a more challenging tour a few days later and Chelsea B did not disappoint. The area Chelsea and my husband snowshoed was not only challenging but absolutely breath taking (pictures). Great tours and experience! Thank you, Donny S and Chelsea B!!

Peak Ascents

13K and Other Peaks

Colorado has many more peaks to explore. While not quite as high as the 14ers, these peaks still provide a challenge and a spectacular goal. Peaks such as Notch Mountain have a long local history as well. Below you will find peak options to choose from.

Please note: All participants need to be at least 16 years old unless we have hiked with your family previously and are familiar with ability levels.

Peak Options

Our guides will discuss peak options with you to choose the best route for your group.  Here are some of our favorite routes.

Planning your peak ascent day:

  • Your guide will arrange start time pick up based on the peak chosen.
  • Plan for an ‘alpine start’ of approx 5-6am for guide pick up.
  • Travel time to chosen trailhead is approx 30-120minutes.
  • The hike up is paced to maintain energy throughout the day.
  • Terrain will be forest trail, above treeline, boulder fields, and scree slopes.  Your guide will provide safety instruction on managing the different terrain.
  • Our goal is to be at the summit or heading back down by noon.  Enjoy the spectacular views!
  • As we work our way back down, we will be watching the sky for potential afternoon thunderstorms.
  • Return to the vehicle at the trailhead by late afternoon for the travel back to your lodging.

Mt. Powell (13,575′)

Mt. Powell is the highest peak in the Gore Range and is named after John Wesley Powell, the great western explorer who climbed this peak on the way to his epic journey down the Colorado River and travels through the Grand Canyon. The relatively remote location of the peak makes for an exciting high alpine experience. One or two nights camping is recommended, although the peak can be climbed in one “big” day. Class 2/3, Grade 2.

Uneva Peak (12,200′)

A straight-forward ascent that begins at Vail Pass, this peak provides exceptional high alpine views of the Gore, Ten Mile, and Sawatch ranges. “Off-trail” hiking leads to the summit ridge. Class 1.

Notch Mountain (13,237′)

A maintained trail leads to the summit of this well known peak rewarding the climber with a view of the famous “cross of snow” on the Mount of the Holy Cross peak. Class 1.

Galena Mtn. Couloir (12,922′)

Reaching the summit of Galena Mtn. via a couloir is a challenging introductory snow climb (moderate rating). An alternative south ridgeline is the standard route. Class 2, Grade 1.

Grand Traverse Peak (12,860′)

Located at the head of the Vail Valley, this mountain is highlighted in many of the photos you see of Vail Village with the Gore Range as a backdrop. The peak can be climbed in one day, but a one night camping is a great option. Class 2/3, Grade 2.

Homestake Peak (13,200′)

From the deck of the 10th Mtn. Hut, Homestake Peak dominates the western skyline. It’s graceful, long sloping eastern ridgeline beckons to be climbed. Remnants of the WWII ski troops remind us of their adventures in these mountains. Class 2, Grade 1.

Mt. Jackson (13,670′)

Named for the famous photographer Henry Jackson who first photographed Mt. of the Holy Cross, this peak offers great views of the Mount of the Holy Cross, the Cross Creek Valley, the Gore Range, and the heart of the Holy Cross Wilderness. High Alpine hiking and a short Class 3 scramble on the summit ridge makes this a challenging ascent. The route requires a minimum of two nights camping in the Grouse Creek valley and the Turquoise Lakes. Class 3, Grade 2

Logistics & Gear

  • Guides: Maximum participant to guide ratio of 3:1
  • The Climb: Strenuous. 8 to 12 hours with an early morning ‘alpine start’
  • Transportation: We will pick you up and drop you off

FAQ

Traveling with an experienced, local guide offers many benefits over traveling alone in unfamiliar terrain.

  • You’ll stay found, whether you hike on trails or on an undeveloped, cross-country route.
  • Your guide will offer instructional tips for safe and controlled travel on uneven terrain, such as talus.
  • Colorado mountain storms can be unpredictable. Your guide knows how to read the signs of changing mountain weather and will make decisions based on his/her assessment. We start our day early to avoid thunderstorms and allow for plenty of time descending.
  • Your guide will help keep you healthy, hydrated, and in-tune with possible physical difficulties that can come with high altitude exertion.
  • You’ll learn about the local and natural history of the area.
  • Your guide is certified in wilderness first aid.

You need to be in decent shape. Hiking a 14-er isn’t for beginning hikers. Hiking down a mountain can be more difficult – on your legs, knees, and feet and balance – than hiking up. That’s why we encourage all our guests to use hiking poles. A 1999 study in The Journal of Sports Medicine found that trekking poles can reduce compressive force on the knees by up to 25 percent. Sometimes even physically fit individuals can encounter headaches and other physical challenges at high altitude. Your guide is well aware of these symptoms and can help monitor their effects and offer advice dealing with altitude issues. If you have concerns about your fitness or skill level, give us a call.

Peak ascents require stamina and strength, but they also require that you’re comfortable hiking in uneven terrain and have good balance skills. Depending on the route, you may be required to hike up and down rocks of all sizes, cross a scree or talus slope, or navigate alpine water crossings. Keep in mind that getting up the mountain is only half the hike. Going down is the other half, and after a strenuous climb, it can often be more challenging. We recommend all participants use hiking poles.

Yes. In fact, we highly recommend a multi-day peak ascent in order to have additional options for reaching the summit, if prevented by weather or other factors. Base camp can be set up with the assistance of our llamas to bring in gear.

Hike length and weather concerns require that we pick you up at your hotel early in the morning – what we call an ‘alpine start’ – sometime between 4 and 7 a.m.. The precise time depends on hike length and difficulty, group size, weather forecast, and travel time to the trailhead.

The level of difficulty for most peaks ranges from Class 1, Grade 1 to Class 2, Grade 2:

Class 1: Hiking

Class 2: Simple scrambling, with the possible occasional use of the hands

Class 3: Scrambling; a rope might be carried

  • Grade I:  Normally requires several hours; can be of any difficulty.
  • Grade II: Requires half a day; any technical difficulty

Full Day Fly Fishing

Full Day Backcountry Fly Fishing

Join us for a backcountry fishing experience unlike what you might find on the bigger rivers. Our guides have been hiking and wade fishing our local small streams, beaver ponds and lakes for many years and are looking forward to sharing these places with you. There are “drive to” and “hike to” options throughout the Vail area. Come discover “the other side of Vail” fishing.

Small streams provide the angler with less intimidating wading so you can relax and focus on fishing for brookies, browns, and native cutthroat trout. If you are new to fly fishing, our guides can show you the basics. If you are a seasoned “trout bum” come explore the pools, pockets and riffles with us.

Guides: Maximum participant to guide ratio of 3:1 (if there are 3 in the group we recommend at least one be a proficient fly fisherman)

Note: For groups of 3 participants, an additional guide is often hired to provide for more individual instruction and assistance; the additional cost is $150 for a Half Day and $200 for a Full Day.  If you choose to have just one guide we highly recommend at least one person be an experienced fly fisherman.

We signed up for fly fishing with Don, our guide. He was very knowledgeable, and patient and broke it down to us newbies who were very inexperienced at flyfishing. He made the experience amazing with his fun facts of the area, how to read the river, gear, etc. We just wanted to experience the joy of being on river, out in nature, and feel beautiful weather. So it was a blessing with Don. We felt we could do this again.

We had the best guide for our hike with Paragon. A gentleman named Nate with tons of guiding experience took us on a beautiful driving tour followed by an amazing hike. He was very knowledgeable, flexible, and accommodating. We truly could not have asked for a better experience.
